The Health and Medical Education Authority of the Imam Hussain Holy Shrine has unveiled the first advanced technology for monitoring patient movement during radiotherapy sessions, in a ceremony attended by Sheikh Abdul Mahdi Al-Karbalaei, representative of the Supreme Religious Authority.
Dr. Haidar Al-Abadi, head of the authority, stated that “with the presence of Sheikh Abdul Mahdi Al-Karbalaei, the first technology for tracking patient movement during radiotherapy sessions (SGRT) has been introduced.”
He explained that “this technology has been installed at the Warith International Cancer Treatment Center in Karbala and Al-Thaqalayn Cancer Treatment Hospital in Basra, both affiliated with the Imam Hussain Holy Shrine.”
Al-Abadi noted that “through this step, the shrine reaffirms its commitment to providing the best services for cancer patients by adopting the latest global technologies.”
In the same context, Saeed Al-Hafari, a medical physics and clinical applications specialist at Vision RT, said: “Surface Guided Radiotherapy (SGRT) is not only about managing patient movement, it is an advanced technology that enhances treatment outcomes by using a three-dimensional surface of the patient, improving accuracy and enabling real-time reproduction of the patient’s position.”
He added that “this technique eliminates the need for tattoos, markers, and restrictive immobilization devices, offering a non-invasive and marker-free approach to radiotherapy. It improves precision, efficiency, and patient comfort across all stages of simulation, planning, treatment, and beam delivery.”
Al-Hafari further emphasized that “in our cooperation with the Health and Medical Education Authority of the Imam Hussain Holy Shrine, we witnessed a strong commitment and clear determination to provide the best international technologies for Iraqi patients, as well as foreign patients.”
