As the tenth of Muharram – martyrdom anniversary of Imam Hussain (Peace Be Upon Him) – approaches, a 6250-square-meter carpet has been laid inside the Imam Hussain Shrine to prepare a path for Muslim mourners, who practice a Hussainian rite famously known as “Rekdhet Tweareej," to go through.
“Rekdhet Tweareej” is an Arabic term used to express an approximately 3-kilometer once-a-year run from the south-east entrance of the holy city of Kerbela to the Imam Hussain Shrine. Muslim mourners run toward the Imam Hussain Shrine, wishing they were available when Imam Hussain (Peace Be Upon Him) needed help on the Day of Ashura, so they could help him and sacrifice themselves for him.
The director of Service Affairs Department of the Imam Hussain Shrine, Muntadher Elhemdani, said that the Imam Hussain Shrine has made more space for pilgrims by opening the new basements this year.
