The Imam Hussain Shrine’s website obtained a copy of a letter the Shia Muslim Supreme Religious Authority, sayyid Ali EsSistani, sent UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan in 2003.
The letter included offering EsSistani’s condolences to Mr. Annan on the death of UN representative Sérgio Vieira de Mello and a number of employees — who worked at the UN bureau in Baghdad — caused by an accident.
His Eminence stressed the importance that the deplorable accident wouldn’t affect the UN’s efforts in assisting the Iraqi people during that critical juncture — he also hoped that the UN would take a central role in establishing security and stability in Iraq, in that interim, and supervise the necessary steps that would enable the Iraqis to govern their country and restore their sovereignty.
