Supreme Religious Authority determines proper start for fasting, mentions reasons behind suicide, divorce, family disintegration

In Friday’s sermon the representative of the Shia Muslim Supreme Religious Authority, sheikh Abdul-Mehdi Elkerbela’i, delivered at the Imam Hussain Shrine on May 5, 2019, he talked about the privileges of the month of Ramadhan and how they can contribute to reforming the individual and society.

Elkerbela’i said that Ramadhan is of great importance and privileges, and that’s known through the speeches of the Prophet Mohammed and the infallible Imams (Peace Be Upon Them).

He added that every fasting person should seize this opportunity to change themselves during this month, noting it is a tremendous loss to waste this opportunity, for this month aims to awaken the minds of people and trigger their ambition.

Elkerbela’i stressed the importance of cogitating on the verses of the Noble Quran and the speeches of the Prophet Mohammed (God’s blessings and peace be upon him and his pure family) and not just reading them superficially, noting it’s essential that a fasting person should start cleansing their heart from envy, rancor, arrogance and other vicious deeds.

He indicated that superficial dealings with religious observances, such as performing prayers as movements and utterances is inadequate.

He said further, “Not tackling the issues, such as psychological, social, and economical stress leads to serious issues, such as suicide, divorce, family disintegration, depression, hopelessness, and frustration.”

Elkerbela’i concluded, “Tackling issues and being devout worshippers, especially being spiritually connected with God, will help solve our issues.”
