Fallacy of fasting ninth and tenth of Muharram

Due to disbelief in God and the inherited hatred of the Prophet and Imam Ali (Peace Be Upon Them), Yezeed, son of  Mu’awiya, murdered the grandson of the Messenger of God and the Master of the youth of Paradise "Imam Hussein" (Peace Be Upon Him) in Kerbela on the tenth of Muharram month.

By slaughtering Imam Hussein (Peace Be Upon Him), Yezeed alleged that he retaliated for his ancestors “the non-believers” who had fought the Prophet (God’s Blessings Be Upon Him and His Pure Family) attempting to kill him, and then been killed by Imam Ali (Peace Be Upon Him).

Yezeed persuaded people that Imam Hussein (Peace Be Upon Him) was an apostate who had to be killed; thus, they prevented him from reaching water and then murdered him when he was extremely thirsty.

After murdering Imam Hussein (Peace Be Upon Him), the tyrannical Umayyad media disseminated a fallacy that it was recommended to fast the ninth and the tenth of Muharram month and to celebrate these days based on made-up events they falsely ascribed to the Prophet.

They also said it was recommended to use musical instruments to express joy on those two days. Those two days when the grandson of the Messenger of God was murdered; such a tragedy over which the Messenger of God cried, it rained blood, and the earth bled from beneath its rocks.

It has been narrated in the Sahihain books that: “The Imam Aba Ebdel-Lah (Peace Be Upon Him) was asked about fasting the ninth and the tenth of Muharram month, he said ‘The ninth day was when Imam Hussein, his family, and his companions (Peace Be Upon Them) were surrounded by the non-believers, and the tenth of Muharram was when Imam Hussein (Peace Be Upon Him) was murdered with his companions; thus, is it good to fast and celebrate on such days? By God, the Lord of Ka’bah, it is never good to fast and celebrate on such days, it is but a day of tragedy and catastrophe on which the inhabitants of the heaven and earth were afflicted.’”

There is another narration that says: “Who fasts the ninth and the tenth of Muharram is going to have his or her heart disfigured on the Day of Judgment, and he or she is going to be gathered with those who legislated that fallacy.” Another narration by Imam Er-Ridha (Peace Be Upon Him), which also says, “The one who fasts those days will spend them in Hell.”
