Eid of Ghadir

By: Mohammed Alobaidi

On a very hot day, caravans were on their way back home, coming from Haj. It was the day which marked the last Haj (Pilgrimage) of the Prophet Mohammed (Allah’s Peace & Blessings Be Upon Him & His Pure Lineage); it was named the “Farewell Pilgrimage”. All of a sudden, at a place called “Ghadir Khumm,” the Almighty Allah revealed a holy verse to the Prophet, saying:

O messenger, deliver what has been sent down to you from your Lord; if you do not, you will not have conveyed his message. Allah protects you from the people. Allah does not guide the nation, the unbelievers.

Consequently, the Prophet Mohammed (Allah’s Peace & Blessings Be Upon Him & His Pure Lineage) immediately called for gathering all the caravans that were ahead of his caravan. It was an urgent call; people appeared perplexed what was enormously important to gather for at that time and in that place!

The Prophet stood on a higher position he had ordered to be prepared. He delivered a speech in which he mentioned that he would soon pass away, and then recited to the people the verse which was revealed to him; the verse was called the “communique verse”. He then said:

Do I not have more right over you than you do over yourselves?

     People replied:

Yes, O messenger of Allah, you have more right over ourselves than we do, may our fathers be sacrificed for you!

The Prophet then held up the hand of Imam Ali (Peace Be Upon Him) and said:

Whoever I am his master, Ali is his master. O Allah, support those who support him, be hostile to those who are hostile to him, grant victory over those who side with him, and disappoint those who disappoint him.

The Prophet crowned Imam Ali (Peace Be Upon Them) with a white turban and asked him to sit in a tent so people could congratulate him on his caliphate.

Imam Ali did and all people pledged allegiance to him.

The moment the Prophet finished the coronation of Imam Ali, the Almighty Allah revealed a holy verse, saying:

This day I have perfected your religion for you and completed My favor to you. I have approved Islam to be your religion.

It was a great course of life the Prophet embodied by instilling his prodigious characteristics and kind attitudes in people, and declaring the perfect person ever was to take his position; this is what sophisticated leaders should do.

Prophet Mohammed (Allah’s Peace & Blessings Be Upon Him & His Pure Lineage) was so intelligent and such a person would definitely choose the best one to follow his divine steps in order to do what is right and prohibit what is evil.

He founded humanitarian principles and legislated norms if followed accurately no poor people or issues would remain ever. Moreover, choosing Imam Ali (Peace Be Upon Him) was to maintain what he founded and ever hoped to continue to exist, and the day Imam Ali was chosen was marked as the greatest Eid that true Muslims have annually been celebrating ever since.
